A woman’s breasts often play a central role in how she perceives herself. If she is dissatisfied with the size or shape of her breasts, it can negatively impact her confidence and overall self-image. At Image Refinement Surgery, we perform breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction for women who wish to enhance their self-image with a more proportionate figure.
Breast Augmentation (Enlargement)
For women who desire more attractive feminine curves and figures, we offer breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is designed to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts by inserting a safe, natural-looking implant beneath the soft tissues of the chest.
Breast augmentation begins with incisions made around the nipple, in the crease below the breast, or in the underarm area. The location of the incision is based on the patient’s needs and goals, as well as the surgeon’s expertise in breast surgery. After making the incision, Dr. Malan positions an implant either underneath the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle. If a saline implant is chosen, it is filled with a saline solution to the approximate size determined in the pre-operative consultation.
Many patients opt for silicone gel-filled implants, which are re-emerging as a popular choice. The criteria and advantages for these will be discussed at the time of consultation.
Finally, as the incisions are closed, care is taken to minimize scarring. Most scars fade satisfactorily in 3 to 12 months. Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure, and usually requires one to two hours to complete.
Breast Lift
Time, genetics, and factors such as weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and breast-feeding can all cause the tissue of the breasts to lose elasticity. The stretched tissue can start to sag and become less firm. A breast lift is a surgical procedure to restore a youthful shape and firmness to the breasts.
A breast lift can correct the sagging of the breasts, but it cannot make them appear larger. Many patients opt to have a breast lift in combination with a breast augmentation to achieve the fuller, firmer bust line they desire. Many mastopexy (lift-shaping) patients can choose silicone filled implants if desired.
Breast Reduction
Breasts that are uncomfortably large or noticeably out of proportion with the rest of a woman's contours can cause both physical and emotional discomfort. Physical effects range from back and neck problems to bra strap indentations. Emotional effects can include self-consciousness and embarrassment. A breast reduction can address all of these concerns by making the breasts smaller, firmer, and more suited to the patient's body. Skin, fat, and glandular tissues are removed during breast reduction. Reductions done in the office surgical suite (Image Refinement Surgery) are paid for “out of pocket” and not by insurance.
